Grounds
When we first moved to Springstone in February 1983 the front and back of the property opened onto the surrounding fields, we had the neighbouring farmer's cows coming up to the front door! There was only a short hedge at the top of the rock face to the south and another at the main entrance gate. We are now completely surrounded by hedges consisting mainly of lonicera, laurel, privet, hawthorn, alder, copper beech, berberis, elder, ash, hazel and willow. Consequently we have a vast array of birds visiting our pocket of greenness, some of whom nest here every year.
The rock face to the south is fairly steep with very little soil but we terraced the west side of it and planted blackcurrant, redcurrant, raspberry and gooseberry bushes. On the east side we established the larger fruit trees - cherry, apple and damson - and have cut a lovely orchard walk path through it.
We have excavated two ponds, one which is fed from the holy well water and another at the entrance gate, near the standing stone. These are full of frog spawn each spring, providing us with a large population of frogs all the year round. They also support countless creatures including newts, shrimps and many insects.
