Outside
The farmhouse is built only a few feet away from the holy well and is approximately 30ft x 70ft, minus the adjoining 80ft outbuilding. It can be quite a stroll around the outside. Whoever decided upon its position must have had a compass as the main ridge of the roof is smack on north/south, with the front door facing west and the back door facing east. This, of course, gives the rooms natural light for most of the day.
The original cottage was augmented 100 or so years ago with a Victorian house extension. This added larger windows and a galleried landing on the stairs. It was a grand affair in its day and was probably built for the masters of the house, as when we moved in all the pulleys and wires for the servants' bell system were still in place. Today, we use walkie-talkies (chhhk - put the kettle on - chhhk)!
The end gable of the house nuzzles into the small hill to south of property, from where the rock for its construction was taken and upon which now sits the orchard. The holy well is situated just outside the south gable and can be reached by walking round the property or venturing out of the Victorian front room through the French doors which are directly opposite the water source.
