12.01.05 Snowdrop splendour
Another year, another beautiful display.
These started to push through the ground mid-December, which we think is a record since we've been here, and are in full splendour now. When we first moved here they appeared above ground around at the beginning of January and were in bloom by Imbolc, February 1st. Things have certainly been shifting a bit these past 23 years. Even for the casual phenologist is should be apparent that things are changing.
Due to a lengthy cold snap very few bees and other insects braved the weather to help pollinate the flowers and gather the nectar which is secreted by the green-spotted inner petals. The three larger white outer petals are in fact the sepals of the flower which begin life as protection for the flower bud.
The snowdrops here are always a reminder that another year has begun and it's time to get outside for a good tidy up.
