22.09.04 The Back Paddock
I came back from a camping holiday in Ireland refreshed and invigorated so I totally steamed into the back paddock. I became a digging building machine and within six weeks the new terraced shape was in place.
This is the lower half of the back paddock, you could easily fit three full size badminton courts on this but we will probably make do with just the one and use the other two levels for tents/chickens/veg plot. This whole area is going to look superb next summer. We have even borrowed a powerful rotovator to ensure the best possible surface before we put it to lawn.
Odd to think back to the days when we kept a small herd of Saanan goats on this land. These were milking goats, and for many years this was our source of milk, we made cheese and yogurts too, but as we have planted lots of nice shrubs here, goats were too risky an animal to have around anymore (they will eat practically all vegetation).
The last goat to die here spent most of her life as a grass mower, and when she died it threw me into a panic with what to do with all the grass. After finally buying a new lawnmower I had to set about levelling the paddock into something more manageable for that technology to deal with.
You know, sad thing is that I really miss that old goat at times.
