Water based
If we were going to use a creature as an emblem for Springstone then it would be a tough decision between the frog and the emperor dragonfly. Like all sources of water, Springstone is home to many creatures which reside in or around this magical substance. We have helped things out no end by making two ponds for this wetter side of life.
In February the bottom pond is heaving with frogs making frogspawn. You could fill several buckets with the stuff. We have plenty of toads here too, including natterjacks. As the year progresses we watch the tadpoles hatch and develop until, usually on a damp or rainy evening in July, the yard becomes a bouncing sea of leaping frogs and toads.
The newt population is also quite strong and freshwater leeches, shrimps and various water-based worm life live in our ponds and the streams that feed them. We have never got into fish particularly, although plans are afoot to have a much larger pond that we can stock with the more familiar species.
